Geographies of Time

Overview

This unique collection of poems reflects on relationships with family, the search for a new spirituality and our attitudes toward aging and death. In verse that is fresh and authentic, Geographies of Time charts the journey of a baby boomer as he explores a life spent as a seeker, hovering on the fault lines of eastern and western mysticism. Based on the author's extensive travels, the poems draw upon imagery as varied as the Buddhist temples of Cambodia, the mountain paths of the Swiss Alps, and the parks of New York City.

Reviews

""Robert Giebisch's new book of poetry, Geographies of Time, is a wide-ranging collection spanning foreign travel, philosophy, and family relations. Giebisch is a writer of big ideas grounded with sensory detail. This imaginative collection is imbued with humor as well."" -Christine Beck, former president of the Connecticut Poetry Society and Poet Laureate of West Hartford ""In this substantial collection of poems, Geographies of Time, Robert Giebisch gives new meaning to the phrase 'time traveler, ' skillfully transforming his love of travel into a search for self. Measuring time like an hourglass, he sifts through the past, present, and future. With his masterful use of metaphor, Giebisch captures the reader's attention over and over through the use of specific detail. This very fine collection awakens the reader, urging each of us to do some soul-searching-to time travel within our own personal world-perhaps to find in our own search for self that what we yearn for is right where we are."" -Pat Mottola, Poet Laureate of Cheshire, Connecticut; author of A Town Like That ""An adventurer in both body and mind, Robert Giebisch has immersed himself in sacred landscapes, from Buddhist temples of Cambodia to the alpine peaks of Switzerland and Austria; he has just as courageously explored inner scapes of spirituality, aging, and relationships. These delicate, witty, and moving poems sing of a life lived intensely and reflected on with wisdom.""-Jefferson Singer, Faulk Foundation Professor of Psychology, Connecticut College; author of In Common Things ""With these powerful and evocative poems, Robert Giebisch has crafted a soulful embrace of life-all of it: the passage of time, spiritual journeying, loss, the sanctuary of nature, family relationships, and the inevitability of death. Readers will relish his experiences and insights, extending from his childhood home to Utah, Cambodia, the Alps, a valley below Annapurna, a hospice by Long Island Sound, and a bench in Central Park. So much to savor here!"" -Christopher Ives, author of Zen on the Trail: Hiking as Pilgrimage
