Overview

GEEKY & GODLY Science Fiction, Fantasy, & Faith Is it possible to be a geek and a Christian? Can you be a fangirl and still love Jesus? Is it all right to dream of flying through the stars and still serve here on earth with all your heart? Spoiler Alert! Yes. Yes, you can. Geeky and Godly examines a dozen common tropes in science fiction and fantasy and looks for reflections of the greatest story: the true story of the God who came to seek and save sinners. What can Christians celebrate? What should they be cautious of? Each Trope (chapter) uses images, humor, and Scriptural references as it checks out a trope, gives plenty of examples from movies, television, novels, and comics, and connects it with Jesus. It offers suggestions for how someone who loves that trope might use it to share Jesus and then wraps up with three short devotions. The writing is humorous and instructive. It is written for middle-school ages (grades 5-8) but easily adapts to older students and even up to adult Bible Study and Book Clubs. Available in paperback in either full color or b&w, the 216 page book uses friendly type, colorful pull-quotes, and images to fully engage students from 4th grade to adult. Geeky & Godly is also available in hardcover for gifts and ebook for convenience. Reviews

[Luke writes] in a fun and geeky way: by delving into the genres' most well-loved tropes. From time travel to the depths of space, from aliens to orcs...Through thought-provoking story excerpts, articles, questions, and devotions, he invites us to explore what these tales tell us about ourselves, our world, and our salvation. - Wendy Nikel, author of the Place in Time series Luke expertly pulls the threads woven through the fantasy and sci-fi multiverses to unravel why these grand sagas pull at our heartstrings. This easy read for all ages invites readers to consider their natural knowledge of God and discover His epic story in the Bible. Luke's conversational style is gentle, not pushy, and his true inner geek is exposed not only by his astounding knowledge of sci-fi, fantasy, and comics, but that he can brilliantly write his own tales that are used throughout this book. - TJ Kelley, electronics engineer and former member of the WELS Campus Ministry Committee.

Author Information

Luke Italiano has been a pastor for a decade and a geek for longer than he can remember. One year in the distant past, his goddaughter asked him if she could love Harry Potter and Jesus, too. This book came from that conversation.
