Overview

"A Multi-dimensional Reality Game A traveller unravels puzzles and mazes as he leaps space and time. It is a game and a journey that has its roots in prehistoric India and China, although the Traveller, Krishna, follows one family through 900 years from the invasion of England in 1066 to Afghanistan. Krishna is a Pied Piper; his iconic flute opens gateways into the bloody slaughter of the Battle of Hastings, where the progenitor of the Quartermaine family fights for his life and fortune. Another gate opens into the chaos of the British Raj during the Mutiny. You will freeze during the long retreat of the Army of Cabool in 1842, break codes at Bletchley Park with Alan Turing, and find yourself standing, shocked, in the smoking rubble of a bombed pub in Belfast. Helmand, and Kandahar figure in the tale, until our protagonist arrives, finally, at Gandamak. The Quartermaine family struggles to survive, sometimes only with Krishna's help. His Homeric interventions allow him to reflect on human ideas of responsibility, courage and duty. Krishna is fascinated by humanity's quest for meaning in even the worst circumstances. He looks into the I Ching, Buddhism, computer science, and how ""thinking machines"" manipulate games and their rules. Krishna's discussions with The Shaman, the beautiful woman who bridges a gap between realities, restrain his digressions and explain his more esoteric ramblings. How is the game played? You must first follow the Traveller's music through the gateway to find out."

A Brilliantly Complex Read through its Every Page This very significant book is technically a novel but its storyline draws from actual events and experiences, large and small, of the real world. Interestingly it spans centuries in a well-told semi-fantasy storyline, so some fondness of history is a plus for the reader. The book further takes on the marriage of both European and Asian cultures - which is no small feat and grows the complexity of the story exponentially. The writing itself is mechanically flawless and the gifted wording is highly readable. I am only 1/3 through this book yet already keen to post this review as each chapter is a treat. Very few people could write such a book plausibly and here it is done - a noteworthy book for those long flights. Worth reading. The author and I seem to be of similar age, as we have read all the same books and had generally similar experiences (although no military for me), and seem to share similar interests in philosophy, history, conflict, AI, foreign experiences, etc. Because of the confluence of interests, the book was not only a pleasant and engaging read, but also a bit of a treasure hunt. Would the author mention Harry Flashman? And then he did! Would he mention Claude Shannon (and summarize his contributions accurately)? Yes! Did he properly identify the facts that didn't fit in Turing's suicide ? Yes! Due to the uncanny confluence of interests between myself and the author, this was a particularly engaging read for me. I will admit to skipping over some of preachier philosophy bits at the end. Hence, one star off. A solid read, worth the price of admission. I don't find many new books for which that's true, anymore, so -- high praise.
