Table of ContentsReviewsGarry Monk: Loud Proud and Positive is the story of the journey of footballer Garry Monk, from the parks of Torquay to professional football, and from the bottom division to the Premiership. As the title suggests, this is an enthusiastic, full-on, passionate book about the career of 32 year-old Swansea City defender Garry Monk. This is an unashamedly personal account of his opinions and feelings, injuries and grievances, triumphs and despair. Monk is shown as a man completely dedicated to football; competitive and determined, the Swansea City club captain who has learned to communicate with, inspire and lead his team to victory and promotion to the Premiership. In Loud, Proud and Positive football is often portrayed as a battle, the pitch as a battlefield, sometimes literally during pitch invasions occasioning police charges on horseback and with police dogs. This is a dramatic tale of tactics and honour: early on in his career Garry Monk promises himself that he will go down fighting. This is not a Hello magazine-style account. There is little or no personal biographical information about Garrys family or relationships, apart from several family photos which are left to speak for themselves. Instead it focuses on a chronological recital of the steps to success from the time Monk joined Swansea City in 2004 up until 2012. Occasionally there are humorous anecdotes, tales of bets and mickey-takes or team initiations. Sometimes the mood is darker as he tells of sendings-off, disciplinary meetings, drugs tests, bans and suspensions, or the huge rivalry between Swansea City and Cardiff City. The importance of the support by fans is emphasised by the inclusion of crowd and attendance statistics, the support given at home and away, the affectionate references to the bond with the Jack Army of Swansea fans and the euphoria at the M4 tollbooth on the Severn Bridge where they danced on the motorway after winning the Cup Final at Wembley. Peter Read has worked with Garry Monk to put this book together but Garrys voice can still be heard. There is raw emotion and wry understatement in the phrases used to describe the high tension in the away-game against Bury as Swansea headed for League One: both benches had a bit of a coming together while a Swansea substitute told the Bury captain hed be getting a bit of a slap! Football fans will enjoy reading Garry Monk: Loud Proud and Positive and for other readers it is a great introduction to the exciting world of professional football.
