Overview

NMR has become truly a multidisciplinary area of science dealing with applications ranging from basic to applied sciences including medical, agricultural and industrial. In addition to being an indispensable tool in chemical sciences, NMR is now recognized as an important field in biomolecular structural studies as well as medical diagnosis and intervention. The exciting developments in NMR are still continuing and it is hoped that the day may come when pocket size NMR spectrometers for specific applications may become available. It is therefore, appropriate to bring out a book on this exciting subject with contributions from world renowned experts in the respective areas. The present book contains articles on applications of NMR to metabonomics, early diagnosis of diseases, protein structure determination, NMR in liquid crystals, technique developments, sub-compact NMR instruments and quantum computing.

Author Information

Prof. C.L. Khetrapal is the Distinguished Professor and founder Director of the Centre for Biomedical Magnetic Resonance (CBMR) in Lucknow and is pioneering the field of metabonomics for disease diagnostics and treatment by NMR. He was formerly associated with Allahabad University as its Vice-Chancellor (1998-2001), with TIFR, Mumbai (1959-73), Raman Research Institute, Bangalore (1973-84) and Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (1984-98). At Bangalore, in 1977, he founded the first superconducting magnet based FTNMR National facility (current name: NMR Research Centre). Earlier Prof . Khetrapal pioneered the field of NMR of molecules oriented in liquid crystals, for which he is internationally well known. Recipient of the prestigious S.S. Bhatnagar award in Chemistry and a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy and the National Academy of Sciences, India, Prof. Khetrapal has been a keynote speaker in several international conferences. He has over 250 publications and a co-author of two citation classics. He is also the Founder President of the National Magnetic Resonance Society (NMRS), India, which currently has a membership of over 700 active researchers. Prof. Anil Kumar, currently Ramanna Fellow at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, works in the area of development of NMR techniques for which he is internationally well know. Ph.D. from IIT Kanpur (1969), he did Post-doctoral research in USA (1969-72) and Switzerland (1973-76) with Prof. R.R. Ernst (Chemistry Nobel 1991). He joined IISc in 1977 and in 1979-80 did a sabbatical with Prof. Wuthrich (Chemistry Nobel 2002). He is a fellow of all the three Indian National Science Academies, the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and the International Society of Magnetic Resonance (ISMAR). His scientific achievements include; the first Fourier MRI experiment, the first 2D NOESY experiment in a protein, cross-correlations in NMR relaxation and NMR Quantum Computing. He has over 160 publications and has mentored 20 Ph.D.'s. K.V. Ramanathan is a Professor and the Chairman of the NMR Research Centre at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He graduated from the same Institute where he initiated the work on High Pressure NMR in India. .He worked as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, USA and did pioneering work on overtone NMR spectroscopy. He is interested in the development of new techniques and applications to the solid and the liquid crystalline states as well as NMR instrumentation. His research is particularly devoted to studying partially ordered systems with applications in Chemistry and Biology. He is over 100 publications. He is a fellow of the National Academy of Sciences.
