Author Information

Mordecai Cubitt Cooke (July 12, 1825 in Horning, Norfolk - November 12, 1914 in Southsea, Hampshire) was an English botanist and mycologist who worked as a London schoolteacher, Kew mycologist, India Museum curator, journalist, and author. Cooke was the older brother of art educator Ebenezer Cooke (1837-1913) and the father of book illustrator and watercolour painter William Cubitt Cooke (1866-1951). Cooke, who was born into a mercantile family in Horning, Norfolk, worked as an apprentice to a fabric merchant before becoming a clerk in a law company, although his main interest was botany. While teaching natural history at Holy Trinity National School in Lambeth and working as a curator at the India Museum at the India Office from 1860, he created the Society of Amateur Botanists in 1862. Cooke traveled with the botanical materials from the India Museum to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in 1879. He was awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Victoria Medal of Honour in 1902, and the Linnean Society of London's Linnean Medal in 1903. He claimed to have received multiple honorary degrees for his work, primarily with fungus, including MAs from St. Lawrence University in 1870 and Yale University in 1873, as well as a doctorate from New York University, though these claims are debatable.
