If I had my way, I would replace the red dragon as Waless national emblem with a far nobler creature. Spirited and sleek, lithe and proud, eyes flashing and hoofs thundering, it would have to be the Welsh cob. And unlike the red dragon, it actually exists. Yet, had it not been for the love and dedication of people like the author of this comprehensive autobiography, it could have been a different story. But like the cob itself, Dr Wynne is a survivor.Dr Wynne Davies is a renowned expert on Welsh cobs and ponies. In fact I could safely say that he is THE expert. His expertise spans four decades and countries across the world. He has bred, shown and judged Welsh cobs and ponies for over sixty years and is a prolific author and commentator. This autobiography of over 250 pages is based on his diaries, every chapter spanning a decade. Born in Tal-y-bont, Cardiganshire, his roots are deep in cob country. He was the third child of the shopkeeper at Ceulan Stores, latterly Central Stores, and there was a shed behind the shop where the cob that pulled the provisions cart was stabled. Polly, or rather Ceulan Chessie, was the first to bear the unique prefix that still exists.Like the cobs and ponies he has always bred, Dr Wynne himself is of good stock, with his father joining the Welsh Pony and Cob Society in 1915 and becoming its president in 1955. For years, Dr Wynne was the voice of the main ring in the horse section at the Royal Welsh Show. Having followed a distinguished academic career, he has lived with his wife Ruth in Miskin since the early sixties. His son David still continues the cob and pony tradition, and daughter Jane was raised as a horsewoman. No doubt his seven grandchildren will follow suit.Attempting to review such a comprehensive autobiography in a few hundred words is an impossible task. The man has achieved so much in so many fields that I can only urge you to read it for yourself. I have had the pleasure in the past of interviewing Dr Wynne. His writing is just as magnetic as his spoken words. In fact, the publishers have made it easy for me. His expertise is summed up in one sentence on the back cover: What Dr Wynne doesnt know about the history of Welsh cobs and ponies isnt worth knowing!Amen, say I!Lyn EbenezerIt is possible to use this review for promotional purposes, but the following acknowledgment should be included: A review from www.gwales.com, with the permission of the Welsh Books Council.
