Overview

Excerpt from From the Department of Geology, Leland Stanford Junior University: Magmatic Sulfid Ores Altho the chief types of magmatic ores are well recognized, there is considerable difference of opinion as to the details of the processes by which the ores are formed, and as to the order of crystallization of the ore-minerals with reference to the silicates. These different ideas may be grouped broadly as follows: I. Magmatic ores have been defined as unusual accumulations of certain of the accessory minerals of the igneous rocks; and as the accessory minerals are generally believed to be the first to crystallize out of the magma, according to the order of crystallization suggested by Rosenbusch, the natural inference is that the ores are the first to form, and that they settle by gravity to the base of the magma. For example, it is generally assumed that the segregation of the large bodies of iron ore in the Bushveldt laccolith in South Africa and in the Duluth laccolith and the sulfid masses in the Sudbury laccolith have been con trolled by gravity.'
