The story of Florene Linnen and the Georgetown County Diabetes CORE Group. With only a 6th grade education, she used the lessons that she learned from her parents along with life lessons, to aid her in transforming the treatment of diabetes in the rural (mostly African-American) part of Georgetown County, South Carolina. Having diabetes herself, she took information from a workshop and rallied the community members to work together. Her results had such an impact that people from across the nation have sought out her secrets. Mrs. Linnen and her organization have been recognized across the United States in publications and with various awards. So many people have asked how she did it. This books shares her foundation and the work that she did, while always standing up for what is right. The book shares different projects that the group has implemented in order to give people an idea of what they can do in their communities.

Florene Linnen is the third of 10 children born to Pauline and Silas Jackson. She dropped out of school at the beginning of the 7th grade to go to work. Her family was poor and she wanted to help out. Her parents were Christians with great faith, and they passed that faith on to their children. Florene grew to be a woman of great faith. Her faith combined with her desire for justice and her love for people lead her on a most amazing journey. She had many different jobs over the years as well as life challenges. They all helped to shape her for what would be her greatest accomplishment - The Georgetown Diabetes CORE Group. Her love for people and willingness to always be of help is noteworthy. She has developed a magnetism that enables her to mobilize people to help her to help people. Her work has taken her across the Unites States to speak with government officials as well as groups wanting to follow in her footsteps. Upon retirement, she received the highest honor given by the state of South Carolina - The Order of the Palmetto.
