Overview

Losing My Head: when I see a person or a scene, a coming-together of volumes, my eye suddenly gets drawn in, I abandon myself completely to what I'm seeing, I lose all sense of my own reality, I get drunk on the scene, which absorbs me, transforms me, transcends me, inundates me with pleasure, with the pleasure of life, which I try to record, if not to hold. Every day, armed with his camera and usually driving his moped, Francois-Marie Banier leaves his home with no preconceived ideas in mind, simply the desire to discover what the world looks like on this particular day. Preferring the veracity of black and white, he focuses on street scenes in which the appearance and demeanour of faces and figures bear the marks of a particular life trajectory that has the power to touch our emotions - streetcleaners who look like mythological warriors, people out for a stroll, passers-by, couples, lonely figures - all have lived through experiences and trials that we can only guess at.

Author Information

Francois-Marie Banier was born in Paris in 1947. A novelist and playwright, since the 1970s he has also been taking photographs of public figures as well as anonymous people in the street. In 1991 the Centre Pompidou in Paris exhibited his photographic work for the first time, and further exhibitions have since been organized throughout Europe, in Asia and in Latin America. Maison Europeenne de la Photographie presented a retrospective in 2003, exhibiting his written and painted photographs for the first time. He lives and works in Paris. Richard Peduzzi is an architect, a scenographer, a painter and a designer. Born in 1943, he lives and works in Rome, where he is director of the Villa Medici. He has created countless stage, film and opera sets, as well as designing furniture and museum interiors, for example at the Louvre in Paris and the Guggenheim in New York. Erri de Luca is an Italian writer who was born in Naples in 1950. Until 1976 he was an active member of Lotta continua, a movement of the Far Left. After this he worked as a labourer on building sites, a driver of heavy vehicles, and a bricklayer, jobs that, he says, enabled him to preserve his freedom. He continued this work when his first novel, Non ora, non qui, was published in 1989. Born in 1944, Patrice Chereau is a stage director. His latest work includes the films Intimacy (2000), Son frere (2003) and Gabrielle (2005), the play Phedre (2004), and the Mozart opera Cosi fan tutte (2005).
