Overview

English summary: Perhaps more so than in the case of any other genre, the development of Greek comedy can be traced through centuries. To write its history, however, is complicated by the fragmentary nature of the material, a difficulty addressed in the essays in this volume, originating from papers presented at the workshop Commenting Fragments: The Case of Ancient Comedy (Freiburg, July 2 to 7, 2012). Some focus on the methodological problems in reconstructing the history of the genre and in dividing it into periods; others use new approaches to explore both key characteristics of different eras and the diversity of comedy within any given period. In addition to Athenian comedy, the Sicilian drama of Epicharmus is considered, as well as the reception of New Comedy in Roman Palliata.

Reviews

Ten chapters (six English, four German) accurately capture the problems and opportunities in contemporary study of Greek comedy beyond Aristophanes. Most important are the methodological questions lucidly addressed by each. Richard P. Martin, BMCR 2016.10.03
