OverviewThis text provides a critical introduction to food issues and their inter-connections with planning, places and their governance. Increasingly planners and other professionals are being brought together to consider the range of issues connected to food, as problems that they are required jointly to manage and resolve. This book offers a critical overview of the changing relationship between food, planning, space and governance, drawing from a range of different historic and contemporary international examples, informed by an accessible theoretical discussion. It is divided into three parts. The first reviews the key conventional thinking on food and planning, from traditional ideals (public health and sanitation, and the garden city) to more recent thinking (such as sustainable development and public health promotion). Part 2 explores contemporary issues and concepts, including security, resilience and governance arrangements, affecting both the scale of activities and participation and justice. The perspective is multi-disciplinary, illustrated by international examples. The final section discusses future challenges for food and planning.
