Overview

The Fourth Edition of this easy-to-understand text continues to provide students with a sound understanding of the fundamental concepts of various physical phenomena of science of fluid mechanics. The third edition of this book, developed to serve as text for a course in fluid mechanics at the introductory level for undergraduate course and for an advanced level course at graduate level, was well received all over the world, because of its completeness and proper balance of theoretical and application aspects of this science. Over the years, the feedback received from the faculty and students made the author to realize the need for adding following material to serve as text for students of all branches of engineering. Three new chapters on: Pipe Flows Flow with Free Surface Hydraulics Machinery Large number of solved examples in all the chapters to enable the user to gain an insight in to the theory and application aspects of the concepts introduced. A Solution Manual that contains solutions to all the end-of-chapter problems for instructors. Target Audience B.Tech (All Branches)

Author Information

Ethirajan Rathakrishnan, Ph.D., is Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. He is well-known internationally for his research in the area of high-speed jets. The limit for the passive control of jets, called Rathakrishnan Limit, is the contribution to the field of jet research. The concept of breathing blunt nose (BBN), which reduces the positive pressure at the nose and increases the positive pressure at the base simultaneously, is his contribution to drag reduction at hypersonic speeds. Recently he received a 'Lifetime Achievement Award' from International Sustainable Aviation and Energy Research Society (SARES) for his novel scientific contributions to the area of Sustainable Aviation and Energy. He has published a large number of research articles in many reputed international journals. He is a Fellow of many professional societies, including the Royal Aeronautical Society. Professor Rathakrishnan serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the International Review of Aerospace Engineering (IREASE) and International Review of Mechanical Engineering (IREME) journals. He has authored eleven books including Fundamentals of Engineering Thermodynamics (2nd ed), Helicopter Aerodynamics and Gas Dynamics (7th ed), published by PHI Learning, Delhi.
