"Imagine if time-travel was a reality, and one fine morning you wake up to find yourself flashed back in time, back to the year 1971... In the early '70s our cultural gaze had shifted away from London's Swinging Sixties, back to the USA. The hippie view of the world, with its emphasis on peace, love and nature, focused our collective attention on the anti-war and anti-pollution movements...We were fed-up with the ongoing Cold War and the draining war in Vietnam. We were ready for a new focus and a new vision...as we rejected the old traditions and conservative values of our parents. Women, African Americans, LGBT communities and environmentalists would ramp up the fight for recognition and equality... Now just imagine you flashed back to a town in 1971 England. Although not all doom and gloom, the United Kingdom had found itself slipping on the world stage as America and the USSR battled for domination... By the early '70s, the Baby Boomers were young adults. Everything about them was a break-away from their parents: their music, their fashion, their values, their personal and sexual freedoms... The television was our must-have appliance...Color TVs had been around since the early '50s, however very few people purchased them...By 1971, an estimated 48% of American households owned a color TV... Our love affair with gas-guzzling, pollutant-emitting cars caused our air quality to deteriorate to severely unhealthy levels...pollutants from exhaust and industries left major cities regularly blanketed in a hazardous thick brown haze... The organization Greenpeace was soon formed, with the aim of merging the anti-war movement with the environmental movement. By targeting human or political actions that harm the environment, Greenpeace activists were prepared to put themselves in harms way... We had long ago grown tired and fed-up with the ongoing Vietnam War...Numerous anti-war marches and civil disobedience campaigns were waged...culminating with a 500,000 strong march on 24th April 1971 in Washington D.C... ...a series of leaked articles exposing the truth about US political and military involvement in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos...excerpts from a 3,000-page secret Department of Defense report known as the Pentagon Papers... Political violence in Northern Ireland escalated...culminating in the Bloody Sunday massacre...when British Troops shot 26 civilians, killing 14, in full view of the public and press... Charles Manson and three female members of his cult ""family"" were found guilty of first-degree murder. They would be sentenced to death by gas chamber on 19th April..."
