Overview

Jaguar is creeping through the jungle hoping to find something fat, juicy, and easy to catch. He's famished. Hasn't eaten in days. He stealthily parts some bushes and there, in a natural clearing, is a Tapir. A lovely, fat, juicy Tapir. Jaguar licks his chops, bunches his muscles, and suddenly springs out! The Tapir is startled out of her pleasant daydreaming to stark reality: a huge great Jaguar is charging in her direction, and he's not coming to talk about the weather! Inches from Jaguar's extended claws, Tapir swerves and bolts at the last moment! With Jaguar hot on her heels, she thrashes away in panic, blindly crashing into bushes, narrowly missing tree trunks! Hot in pursuit, Jaguar is almost upon her...just a few more inches and he can sink his claws into her back and bring her down for a the killing bite...just a few more inches....THWACK! ......What happened?! Fables of the Forest and Savanna: Fun Lessons in Ecology is a comic book that portrays South American animals of the Amazon forest and grasslands. The tale of Jaguar and Tapir is one of 11 short stories, of fables, filled with adventure, humor and scientific knowledge imparted by the authors' personal experience and studies as conservation field biologists. Readers of all ages aged 8 upwards will enjoy following the antics of the hero, Flaco the Maned Wolf, and his side-kick Toco the Toucan, as they interact with tortoises, bees, armadillos, parrots, guinea pigs and others. Humans are also involved, enabling the comic to also share knowledge regarding the conservation of biodiversity in the Amazon region. Each story is structured like a fable, with a final message about ecology, and in some cases, a moral principle.

Author Information

Conservationist and cartoonist Alan J. Hesse has over two decades of experience as a field biologist in remote regions of Latin America, much of which served as direct inspiration for many of the scenes and characters in this book. His cartoons have contributed to over 30 conservation projects across the world, and his most recent published comic book is Charles Darwin and the Theory of Natural Selection. Dr. Louise Emmons is a field biologist with over 30 years of international research experience in tropical ecology. Her first-hand observations of wildlife in their natural habitat - including that of the rare Maned Wolf, the main character in these fables - forms the scientific backbone of this book. Emmons currently holds a position as Research Associate at the Smithsonian Institution.
