Overview

This timely volume helps mental health clinicians incorporate different expressive modalities into practice with children, adults, and groups. Expert contributors present in-depth descriptions of their respective therapies, including art, music, dance/movement, drama, poetry, play, sandtray, and integrative approaches. In addition to reviewing the theoretical and empirical bases of each modality, chapters detail the process of assessment and intervention with people experiencing specific clinical problems and life challenges. A wealth of concrete examples and case vignettes are featured throughout to bring key concepts to life. Giving particular attention to strategies for integrating expressive work with other forms of psychotherapy and counseling, this is an eminently practical resource for clinicians of any orientation.

Reviews

This well-edited volume advances our understanding of the practice of the expressive therapies and does so in a clear and concise manner. What is special about this volume is its inclusiveness: all of the major expressive therapies are presented. This is an ideal text for advanced undergraduates and graduate students considering a career in the expressive therapies, as well as for practitioners who want to explore an integrative approach to clinical work. --Paul M. Camic, PhD, Liberal Education Department, Columbia College Chicago <br> The use of the expressive therapies as powerful forms of healing extends back throughout the history of humankind. Despite the centrality of the arts to therapy, this volume offers the first comprehensive description of the therapeutic use of the various creative arts modalities. It will serve as an invaluable resource for professionals and students in mental health, rehabilitation, and health care who wish to combine the arts with therapy to improve

Interesting and timely...will be of use to any practitioner who is beginning to consider using expressive therapies. It taught me a lot and pointed me in the direction of further reading. For teachers thinking of introducing such approaches to groups of counselling and psychotherapy students, this 'broad spectrum' is an excellent beginning....I would recommend this book for library purchase and as an introductory text for students....Provides a useful overview of a growing field in therapeutic practice. -- British Journal of Guidance and Counselling There is something for everyone in this book. The compilation of authors from different areas of specializations demonstrates the editor's effort to reach out to sister disciplines and appeal to a wide range of health care professionals with a range of clinical experience....An excellent introduction to the field, capturing the essences of each of the topics presented, while sparking the reader to pursue other resources which may be of particular interest. For the more experienced clinician who has a basic foundation on expressive therapies, this book provides sophisticated information including theoretical constructs which will challenge and expand the reader's understanding and ways of applying the arts to their practice. Regardless of the reader's skill level, vignettes in each chapter provide poignant case examples illustrating the truly powerful healing and transformative effect that the arts have in treatment. -- Clinical Social Work Journal
