Overview

The revised edition of this award-winning book offers thirty-three Neuro Updates, which provide evidence-based data to help you recognize and explain the deeply transformational nature of the work. Expanding the Practice of Sex Therapy looks beyond behavioral treatments, pharmaceutical interventions, and performance goals to a comprehensive picture of what your clients want and need when they enter sex therapy, and offers creative ways to engage your clients in their own therapeutic process, whether or not you are trained as a sex therapist. Central to Gina Ogden’s approach is her Four-Dimensional Wheel of Sexual Experience, an innovative template that recognizes the full range of sexual issues: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. The text is organized into five practice-oriented sections that introduce the 4-D Wheel; show you how you can use it with individuals, couples, and groups; and encourage you to explore it on your own.

And then she published this second edition, adding cutting-edge understanding of the science of transformation. Every sexuality educator, sex therapist, and lover will want to read this new offering. Thirty-three Neuro Updates stunningly integrate knowledge of how the brain shapes sexual experience, updating the perspectives from body, spirit, mind, and heart so well illuminated in the first edition. Paradigm shifting! Susan Stiritz, PhD, MSW, President, American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT); Chair, Sexual Health and Education, Master of Social Work Program, Brown School, Washington University, St. Louis This book offers the latest in sexual science and brain science and emphasizes that ultimately, we do our best work when we ask new questions about sex that include a client's mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual stories.ã In an area where there are too few books to guide us, a real highlight of Ogden's book is her self-awareness as a therapist and her talent as a supervisor and teacher. Each page is rich with her insight. I will be recommending it enthusiastically to others. ã Sallie Foley, coauthor of Sex Matters for Women; Director, University of Michigan Sexual Health Certificate Program Gina Ogden's contribution to the field of sex therapy will last far beyond the quest for a new pill or the diagnostic treatment of pathologies. Her 4-D model reflects a collaborative paradigm for how to address and resolve sexual issues through integration of the whole human being. This new edition is a treasure, offering scientific relevance to the experiential world Ogden presents so well. Tammy Nelson, PhD, LPC, author of Getting the Sex You Want and The New Monogamy: Redefining Your Relationship After Infidelity What I find so stunning in Gina Ogden's 4-D approach is the mysterious transformational power so often experienced by couples in my practice who `walk the Wheel.' Tina Nevin, RN, author of Pussypedia: What Every Woman Should Know About Her Genitals; Certified Specialist in Sexological Counseling, Vaxjo, Sweden Expanding the Practice of Sex Therapyã incorporates the holistic integrative approach that has helped so many clients feel better and more accepting of themselves as sensual and sexual beings. This is one of the best and most practical books I have ever read on the subject of sex therapy. It moves beyond theory to practical approaches and applications to create change.
