Overview

In Existential Therapy: Responses to Frequently Asked Questions, the authors address those questions most frequently asked by potential clients of existential therapy or by people beginning their training or by those interested in counselling or psychotherapy. The book is divided into five parts, with each focusing on responding to questions about different elements of existential theory and its practice and applications: Part 1: Existential philosophy Part 2: Existential method and theory Part 3: Existential skills and practice Part 4: Existential applications in different contexts Part 5: Existential relevance to everyday life The Q&A format, presented in accessible language, emphasises commonly unknown or misunderstood areas that are typically overlooked. The book will appeal to a wide audience of potential clients and trainees, practitioners from other approaches, and those outside of the profession who are curious to understand more about existential therapy.

Reviews

'Existential Therapy: Responses to Frequently Asked Questions is the perfect introduction to existential philosophy and its application to therapeutic practice and everyday life. The authors, all experienced therapists, are to be congratulated for demystifying existential therapy. Their accessible, refreshingly jargon-free approach provides a companionable guide to this most practical of philosophies. While the Q&A format gives the reader the freedom to dip in and out, or read from cover-to-cover, as they please, it does not detract from the overall quality of the text. Anyone interested in the nature of human existence - whether trainee, practitioner, client or the general reader - will find here inspiring and creative ways to meet the inevitable challenges of living.' Simon du Plock, DCPsych, is Senior Research Fellow at the Metanoia Institute, London 'Existentialism has a reputation for being rather dense and consequently it is often misunderstood. This book shows that when written about well, its questions can become understandable, its insights can become practical and its relevance can become contemporary. The authors, all experts and teachers in the field, have distilled their experience and knowledge into a highly coherent and readable overview. Although written for relative beginners it can offer a great deal to all readers, whether familiar with existential therapy or not.' Martin Adams, PhD, author of Skills in Existential Counselling & Psychotherapy (with E. van Deurzen), A Concise Introduction to Existential Counselling, and An Existential Approach to Human Development
