Overview
Simile is an archetypal feature of world literature. The book is a study of specific types of simile, namely comparison and identification with exemplary figures drawn from myth, history or historical legend, the Bible, the authorial canon, or literary tradition in the period from Homer to the medieval European lyric in the later fourteenth century, up to and including 'Petrarch'. The languages covered are thus classical Greek, classical, post- classical and medieval Latin, Occitan/Old Provencal, Old French, medieval German and medieval Italian. Representative examples of comparison and identification with an exemplar are given in the original language, followed by a translation and commentary. This re-affirms the importance of detailed textual and linguistic analysis in the study of literary and stylistic phenomena, and forms the basis for a survey of general developments. These may then be shown to transcend the boundaries of space, time, and established cultural traditions.
