OverviewThis book is a collection of the latest economic research into the effects of exchange rate policy on output growth. Focusing on four Eastern European transition economies: Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Poland and Slovenia, the contributors attempt to measure the direction of the response of output to changes in the real exchange rate and the strength of such output responses. The authors examine some of the theoretical issues of output responses to exchange rate changes, and go on to offer a comparison between the effects of the exchange rate on output in each of the four countries, employing estimation and simulation empirical techniques. The book concludes with six individual case studies, and finds that overall, the results of the research suggest that the effectiveness of the exchange rate for the boosting of economic activity is limited.
