OverviewEwald Matare (1887-1965) is one of the most important protagonists of classical modernism and post-war art in Germany. He is especially known for his animal sculptures, the trademark of his complex oeuvre. Less well-known is his early work, which spans a period from 1907 until the 1920s. The volume introduces these relatively unknown works from this period for the first time as paintings, sculptures, and works on paper are presented in context with works of his artist colleagues.
