He received his bachelor's degree in Biology/Chemistry with a concentration in Theology from Evangel College in 1981, his doctorate in Medicine from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in 1986, and his certification in General Surgery from Iowa Methodist Medical Center in 1991. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and an alum of the Iowa Writers' Workshop Summer Program. He has three sons and is married to Kevin Kopelson.
