Reviews

While many books on psychiatry are targeted at mental health professionals. this one fills an essential niche by aiming at physicians in the primary care setting. It is important to note that most patients with psychiatric disorders are managed in the primary care setting, making this book especially relevant. As noted in the foreword, psychiatric patients are often stigmatized, making them reluctant to seek out the proper care. Primary care physicians, therefore, have an obligation to detect patients with mental illness and manage them appropriately -- a view which is emphasized repeatedly throughout the book. Moreover, it provides guidance to primary care physicians about when to refer patients to mental health professionals. By empowering primary care physicians with strategies for diagnosing and treating patients with psychiatric disorders as well as indications for referring patients for secondary care, the book prepares primary care physicians to manage patients with mental illness. - 4 star rating by Bradley Cutler, MD (Rush University Medical Center) on Doodys Enterprises, Inc, USA Book Review Service.
