Overview

This book deals with ""crypto-biometrics"", a relatively new and multi-disciplinary area of research (started in 1998). Combining biometrics and cryptography provides multiple advantages, such as, revocability, template diversity, better verification accuracy, and generation of cryptographically usable keys that are strongly linked to the user identity. In this text, a thorough review of the subject is provided and then some of the main categories are illustrated with recently proposed systems by the authors. Beginning with the basics, this text deals with various aspects of crypto-biometrics, including review, cancelable biometrics, cryptographic key generation from biometrics, and crypto-biometric key sharing protocols. Because of the thorough treatment of the topic, this text will be highly beneficial to researchers and industry professionals in information security and privacy. Table of Contents: Introduction / Cancelable Biometric System / Cryptographic Key Regeneration Using Biometrics / Biometrics-Based Secure Authentication Protocols / Concluding Remarks

Author Information

Sanjay Ganesh Kanade obtained his Masters degree in Instrumentation engineering from SGGS Institute of Engineering and Technology, Nanded, India, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Institut Telecom SudParis, France, in 2010. His Ph.D. research was in the field of information security by combining biometrics with cryptography, while preserving privacy. At present, he is a post-doctoral researcher at MinesTelecom SudParis. His research interests include signal and image processing, pattern recognition, biometrics, coding theory, and cryptography. As of May 2012, his full list of publications include one patent, one journal paper, and ten publications in conference proceedings. Dijana Petrovska-Delacretaz obtained her degree in Physics and Ph.D. from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Lausanne. She was working as a Consultant at AT&T Speech Research Laboratories and as a post-Doc at Telecom ParisTech (for two years), and as a Senior Scientist for four years at the Informatics Department of Fribourg University, Switzerland. She currently holds an assistant professor position within Mines Telecom SudParis. Her research activities are oriented towards pattern recognition, signal processing, and data-driven machine learning methods, that are exploited for different applications such as speech, speaker and language recognition, very low-bit speech compression, biometrics (2D and 3D face, and voice), and cryptobiometrics (including privacy preserving biometrics). As of May 2012, her full list of publications is composed of three patents, two publicly available databases (for speaker recognition and biometrics evaluations), two collections of open-source software, one book, 19 book chapters and journal papers, and 55 publications in conference proceedings. Bernadette Dorizzi obtained her Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics at the University of Orsay (Paris XI-France) in 1983, on the study of integrability of dynamical systems. She has been a Professor at Telecom SudParis (ex-INT) since September 1989, and led the Electronics and Physics (EPH) department from 1995-2009. She is in charge of the Intermedia (Interaction for Multimedia) research team, and her research domain is related to pattern recognition and machine learning applied to activity detection, surveillance-video, and biometrics. She is the coordinator of the Bio-Identity Institut Mines-Telecom research project and of the BioSecure Foundation. She is the author of more than 300 research papers and has supervised more than 15 Ph.D. theses.
