Gender inequity in medical research has only recently become a public health concern. Although many publications address this information deficit, this encyclopedia is the only one to focus on the social, political, economic, and ethical issues of more than 200 topics--e.g., issues and history of diseases of women and health concerns of different ethnic groups of women. While many publications concentrate on medical advice, this encyclopedia stresses current and past debates about treatment, with accompanying social, economic, and political implications. The presentation of topics includes defined terms and explanations of surrounding issues. The book describes some representative laws and court decisions directly related to women's health issues. An extensive bibliography and selected list of Internet sites provide valuable reference materials and contact information for organizations. Gay's significant experience in social issues is demonstrated in the book's content. Recommended particularly for women's health and consumer health collections. -Choice ... a good starting point for research on gender issues in healthcare policy. Useful to large public, academic, health science, and women's studies collections. -Library Journal The Encyclopedia of Women's Health Issues begins where most other texts leave off. the encyclopedia covers the sociological, political, economic, and ethical elements of women's health...recommended for larger public libraries with consumer health collections. The book is appropriate for academic libraries with special emphasis on health policy and politics. -E-Streams Kathlyn Gay provides the long-awaited accomplishment of presenting both descriptive summaries and a resource directory for a wide variety of health topics....The book is well organized and easy to use. It is recommended for members of the young adult population in high school who are seeking resource information about women's health issues. Readers will find it a one-stop shop for initiating their searches for information in this field. -SB&F This encyclopedia should aid in any discussion of contemporary women's health issues, but it functions just as effectively as a source for historical perspective when applicable....This work stands alone in the existing selection of related subject encyclopedias in its inclusion and focus on those aspects of women's health rarely compiled in one volume: the political, legal, and economic....The reading level is appropriate for teens, making this a fine selection for high school libraries. Public libraries should be the primary buyer for this useful addition to the literature on women's health. -Reference & User Services Quarterly While this volume is targeted to women's health, it also covers issues such as agoraphobia, caffeine and environmental health hazards, which are not exclusively women's health issues. This reference will be helpful in high school libraries because it does focus on women. -Blanche Woolls & David Loertscher (GaleGroup.com) It's been known for some time that health is influenced by societal as well as individual factors, but most reference works on women's health focus on the personal rather than on political/social components. Kathlyn Gay's new encyclopedia fills that gap nicely...The Encyclopedia is recommended for collections in women's organizations as well as academic and public libraries. -Feminist Collections The book'a approach is evenhanded, and the reading level should be comfortable for both general adult and teen audiences. With its emphasis on social rather than medical aspects of women's health, it will be a wonderful tool for those moments that every reference librarian faces when an angst-driven student approaches 30 minutes before closing gasping, I have a (health/science/current events) report due tomorrow! Help me find something good! -Booklist/Reference Books Bulletin ?While this volume is targeted to women's health, it also covers issues such as agoraphobia, caffeine and environmental health hazards, which are not exclusively women's health issues.
