Overview

This book is a practical guide for managers to increase and support employee engagement through stronger performance management tools and techniques. In this second edition, Edward Mone and Manuel London incorporate new developments in the field, including discussion of issues about the value of challenging goals, annual formal appraisals, forced ranking, and ways to give constructive feedback. The authors expand the traditional notion of performance management to include building trust, creating conditions of empowerment, managing team learning, and maintaining ongoing straightforward communications about performance, all of which are critical to employee engagement. Case studies offer concrete examples, and checklists and surveys supply managers with ways to assess employee engagement as well as directions for increasing engagement. An up-to-date, straightforward guide, this book is appropriate for graduate students in Employee Engagement, Human Resources, and Management Studies, as well as scholars and practitioners in those fields.

`A compendium of down-to-earth solutions to the eternal problems associated with complex relationships, feedback, and performance appraisals. The partnering of a practitioner and an academic produces the perfect balance of applicable advice and evidence-based best practices.' -David W. Bracken, Professor of Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Keiser University, USA; DWBracken & Associates, USA `Practical and professionally sound, this book is a go-to resource for human resource managers, consultants and researchers interested in getting to the bottom of what works and why. The authors distill the literature and connect practice to the information that supports its use. The result is a book full of actionable intelligence, a welcoming read for human resource and business leaders alike.' -Thomas Diamante, Executive Vice President and Practice Director of Executive and Organization Development, Corporate Counseling Associates, Inc., USA; President Consulting Division, New York State Psychological Association, USA `Engagement, empowerment, trust, performance management, appraisal.... It all gets very confusing. Mone and London can clear that up. This is a great `how-to' book, but also draws distinctions among constructs that are clear and that you can really bank on.' -Paul E. Levy, Professor and Chair of Psychology and Interim Chair of Child and Family Development, The University of Akron, USA
