OverviewMercury is a metallic element that occurs naturally in the environment. This report reviews the human health effects of two of the primary categories of mercury and its compounds: elemental mercury, the main form of mercury released into the air as a vapour by natural processes and which may occur in both liquid and gaseous states; and inorganic mercury compounds, including mercurous chloride. The report is published under the joint sponsorship of WHO, the United Nations Environment Programme, and the International Labour Organization; and produced within the framework of the Inter-organization Programme for the Sound Management of Chemicals (IPCS).
