Overview

Electrified interfaces are encountered whenever two different conducting phases come into contact, and they can be defined as those interfaces whose electrical state can be kept under control and varied at will. Electrified interfaces range from metal/semiconductor and metal/electrolyte interfaces to colloidal particles and biological membranes; even metal/vacuum interfaces can be regarded as electrified when their work function is controlled by varying the amount of some chemisorbed species. The role played by electrified interfaces is fundamental in some many physical, chemical and biological system that their study has been tackled by researchers with different scientific backgrounds using different methodological approaches. In spite of their different nature, the various electrified interfaces share a number of common features and of methodological approaches to their study. This book draws together, in one volume, a discussion of the multifarious electrified interfaces by covering their thermodynamic and structural aspects, electrical and in situ spectroscopic experimental approaches, statistical-mechanical theories of interfacial structure, and dynamics of electronic and ionic transfer across electrified interfaces.
