OverviewThe Discovery of anaerobic ammonium oxidation ( anammox ) process was done in Netherlands in the year 1995 by Van der Graaf et al. (1996) is a novel and sustainable technique that has revolutionized the nitrogen removal from Ammonium laden residual streams and has the potential to replace the conventional (N&DN) process due to several key advantages such as low sludge production, reduced aeration and no requirement of external carbon source. However, there are several key factors that play a significant role in the microbial growth and requires an extensive study in detail viz., Ammonium/Nitrite concentration, pH, Temperature, Dissolved Oxygen and Oxygen reduction potential. This research work has been carried out under the auspice's guidance of Dr Abid Ali Khan Sb., one of the brilliant faculty of Department of Civil Engineering, JMI having expertise in wastewater treatment and carried out in his globally recognized LABMITE. This work also emphasizes upon the scope for further study into this domain.
