Overview

This book describes the devastation wrought by epidemics from past centuries in Europe, including the Black Death, the Dancing Mania, and various epidemics in England. Detailed descriptions are provided of the kinds of suffering encountered by victims of these pestilences. It is unlikely that citizens living in our modern age are familiar with the symptoms and effects of horrible diseases that victimized people in Europe, China, Africa, and the Near East over a period of centuries. For those readers wondering if the effects of Ebola resemble those of epidemics of the past, reading the accounts described in this book may be illuminating. No information about Ebola is included in this account because an abundance of literature about Ebola is currently available on the market. By reading the accounts of other plagues, one can see that many of the attributes of Ebola resemble those described in this volume. Will Ebola deliver similar devastation to what is described within? The information included in this book is taken from The Black Death and The Dancing Mania, by J.F.C. Hecker, 1888, and from A History of Epidemics in Britain, by Charles Creighton, 1891. These volumes are now in the public domain.
