Overview
The history of West and East Ham, lavishly illustrated with images through time. East Ham and West Ham, now the borough of Newham, have seen dramatic changes since the beginning of the 19th century. Already used by industry as it spread out of the City, these two townships, between the rivers Roding and Lea, saw the construction of the Royal Docks and then of the massive Beckton gasworks. Speculative builders racked up mean terraces in the south, while in the north Stratford became a major rail hub. The story ranges from rural life, the bombing of industry in the last war, to the tragedy of Ronan Point. 70 b/w illustrations
