Overview

U.S. and Russian scientists worked in collaboration in using the Space Shuttle and the Mir Space Station as platforms for acquiring remote sensing data of the Earth. This experiment provided fascinating photographs of our planet and insights into dynamic earth processes. The observations show the dramatic effects of global environmental change including the fluctuating water levels of the Caspean Sea that threaten population centres and important oil resources, the flooding of the Nile, drought in the Southeaster U.S. and Mexico, and the events related to El Ninio. Land use was also studied, providing outstanding pictures of major cities and documenting urban growth.
