Overview

A collection of 15 short stories published in 1914 in which Joyce illuminates the paralysis of Dublin middle-class society. At the time, nationalism was at its peak in Ireland. Europe was ravaged by war and Dublin found itself in the midst of conflicting beliefs and loyalties. The stories incorporate the idea of epiphanies and a sudden consciousness or illumination of the soul. Readers of Ulysses will be familiar with some of the characters.

About The Author Irish writer James Augustine Aloysius Joyce (1882 -1941) was a novelist, poet nd one of the most influential writers in the modernist avant-garde of the early 20th century. Joyce is best known for Ulysses (1922), in which the episodes of Homer's Odyssey are paralleled in an array of contrasting literary styles including the stream of consciousness technique. Other well-known works are the short-story collection Dubliners (1914), and the novels A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) and Finnegans Wake (1939). Joyce was born into a middle class Dublin family on the way down. A brilliant student, he excelled at the Jesuit schools Clongowes and Belvedere, despite his chaotic family life and financial problems. He attended University College Dublin and emigrated to continental Europe with his partner Nora Barnacle. They lived in Trieste, Paris, and Zurich. Though most of his adult life was spent abroad, Joyce's fictional world revolved around Dublin.
