I was drawn to the Dreamtime Mysteries Trilogy by Jenni Barnett because I felt that I would be able to relate to Rex. I am a reader who is also the first generation to grow up in the shadow of British colonization, whereas my parents grew up directly under it. I felt that Barnett's writing style was true to the language it was representing, and the exchanges of dialogue came across as authentic. The conversational nature of most of the narrative kept me engaged, and in many ways, I was under that tree with Rex, listening to Gran Yan. Barnett's trilogy is beautiful and immersive, and a treasure for readers who are looking for something deep and meaningful. Very highly recommended. Reviewed by Asher Syed for Readers' Favorite What Jenni Barnett's stories are her own, but she has told them with such accuracy and attention to detail, that I paused part way to double check that they weren't a legitimate retelling of real cultural stories. I am beyond impressed with the accuracy of points in the book, and the care to provide a glossary with those who are not used to the First Nation lingo. Jordan Garefolia Blending a fictional premise with well-researched legends, this book is a great starter read for those interesting in learning more about Aboriginal stories, and includes a glossary of mixed aboriginal language, index of communities and bibliography. Aimee Anne Jenni Barnett brings the rich history and culture, vast idiosyncrasies, and deeply rooted beliefs and traditions of the Booran aboriginal people to breathtaking life! Barnett's work is an exciting twist of meticulously researched myths and legends with a fascinating narration that educates in an exuberant fiction that is delightful. .A. Singh Barnett has a lyrical style of writing, drawing interest from the beginning of the first chapter. The reader becomes involved in the histories and legends like a moth to a flame, as she breathes new life into a bygone race, full of depth and personality. Hand-drawn images are interspersed throughout, breaking up the stories and providing added imagery to the legends as they unfold. Although it is hard to put this novel down, being separated into three parts enables the reader to return to it later without getting lost. This is the perfect book for someone who enjoys legends, mythology, folklore, and tribal history. Honestly, anyone who enjoys a good strong story with enjoyable characters and easy to follow plot would enjoy this novel. It is one that deserves to be read; it's very well written and enjoyable, interesting and creative. What Jenni Barnett has done with these books, is made her own stories based on her deep understanding of Central Australian culture and history. Her stories are her own, but she has told them with such accuracy and attention to detail, that I had to pause part way and double check that they weren't a legitimate retelling of real cultural stories. The author has gone to great lengths to be accurate while also telling a complete story and having to fill in historical and linguistic gaps where no information exists. The finished product will fascinate with its history and information and delight with the imaginative dialogue and events of a bygone era. A glossary of aboriginal terms and genealogical listing of the tribal characters and their roles within said communities is included at the end of the story. Dreamtime Mysteries series will captivate readers, giving a greater perspective on the varying cultures and development of human history.....Michael Radon, Premium US Reviews What I majorly like about the book is the beautiful chronological order that history repeats itself, this is made even more possible by the existence of written memoirs by the Bancroft patriarchs. Dr. James Bancroft lost his entire family except for the father in England, to his own nuclear family lost in an English invasion in Australia leaving only his son Samuel Bancroft, all the way to their present descendant Rex Graham. I rate this book four out of four stars..Dylan Ward, Premium US Reviews.
