Overview

English summary: With the reopening of the Hildesheim Cathedral Museum in April 2015, one of the most extensive collections of church art had received spacious new facilities. Since 1985, the medieval church treasures from the cathedral and St. Michael's church have belonged to the Hildesheim UNESCO-World Heritage Site. The focus of the new presentation is on artwork created between 1000 and 1250. In this period, Hildesheim was one of the leading religious and cultural centers in Europe but works of art from more recent historical periods are also exhibited, such as the Renaissance era rood-screen of the cathedral or the monumental tapestry-cycle from the early 17th century that contains the legend of Artemisia. The historical works stand as a counterpoint to works by contemporary artists such as Bernhard Heiliger, Arnulf Rainer, Gerd Winner or Emil Cimiotti. This richly illustrated publication offers a broad selection representing the main collection, including short texts and mostly new images.
