The fascinating story of a delightful medical fortress. This book tells the story of a remarkable one-hundred year period in life, medicine, patient care, community events and world affairs, as experienced by Dolycwrt Surgery, a delightful medical fortress between the years 1898 and 1998. Through the eyes of Dolycwrt Surgery, in Whitland, West Wales, the story provides an insight into an incredible transition in life from the days of its first doctor who travelled around this vast country practice on a horse and cart to the thoroughly modern era of purpose-built health centres, when, interestingly, the last locum at Dolycwrt left for New Zealand to fulfill her next medical appointment. Charting the lives of the doctors who contributed to the life of Dolycwrt Surgery and had a great impact on the community, the story gives a wonderful insight into the old values and standard of medicine and of the day. -- Gwasg Gomer

Author Information

Roger Penn is the son of Dolycwrt's longest serving GP, the late Dr George Penn, who practiced there for 42 years. He now lives in Dolycwrt with his wife, Celeste. A native of Whitland, the author attended the local primary and grammar schools before joining Lloyd's Bank Limited in 1976. His unswerving passion for Dolycwrt and its proud traditions and history inspired him to put pen to paper and, having retired in 2010 he set to work to do exactly this. Roger Penn has a selection of small publications to his name, but this is his first major work.
