Overview

Renaissance England's great tragedy of intellectual overreaching is as relevant and unsettling today as it was when first performed. This edition provides newly edited texts of both the 1604 (A-Text) and 1616 (B-Text) versions of the play, with detailed explanatory annotations. Included are a selection from Marlowe's main source, The Damnable Life and Deserved Death of Dr John Faustus, along with contemporary writings on magic and religion. Twenty-five interpretations allow students to enrich their critical understanding of the play. A chronology and selected bibliography are also included.

Author Information

The circumstances of Christopher Marlow's death at the age of 29 in May 1593 have never been adequately explained. His achievements as a playwright and a poet have kept alive a curiosity about Marlowe which has lasted for over four hundred years. But this is not the only controversy. For some time a theory existed that Marlowe wrote at least some if not all of Shakespeare's plays, or at least that Shakespeare 'borrowed' from him. Few writers have 'achieved' such notoriety during their lives and after death.
