A Shakespearean sonnet as a picture book? Children love rhyme and rhythm...so why not rhyme in a sonnet? This story about being brave enough to make a change is short and sweet (140 syllables to be exact). Using the sonnet structure, Dizzy, a carousel horse, decides to change her course in the three quatrains. Is she happy with the outcome? Find out in the rhyming couplet. Very young children will love the colourful illustrations and the gentle rhythm of iambic pentameter, while older children can begin to learn about this 1000-year-old poetic form. In the back of the book there is information on the history and structure of the sonnet as well as some pages where children can practice their own rhyming patterns and iambic pentameter, and even try penning their own sonnets.

Author Information

E.J. Wolfson is both Canadian and Swiss. She has been writing all her life but inspiration for stories and poems these days comes from having lived in four different countries, with her husband, two children (now grown and married) and a stray dog they found along the way. She currently resides in Switzerland where she writes, as well as designs and edits an international women's club magazine. She loves to discover-to walk and hike, and to travel, especially to all the Medieval villages in Europe.
