OverviewWith every passing year, the United States is becoming increasingly diverse, yet diverse learners continue to be underidentified as gifted as well as underrepresented and underserved in gifted programs. Additionally, when diverse learners are identified for gifted services, they are not retained in these programs at the same rate as their peers. Diversity in Gifted Education presents characteristics of diverse gifted learners and an understanding and analysis of their characteristics to assist in their identification for gifted programs and services. Obstacles to identifying diverse gifted learners are discussed along with the societal implications resulting from the lack of appropriate identification and service. This book presents research-based strategies for identifying diverse gifted learners as well as strategies from teachers of these learners themselves on what works to increase retention in gifted programs.
