Often called the father of modern political philosophy, he was a senior official in the Florentine Republic, responsible for military and diplomatic affairs. His only book that was printed during Machiavelli's lifetime was The Art of War (1521), about military science. He also wrote the Discourses on Livy (1531) on how a republic should be started and structured. His most famous work was The Prince (1513), a guide on how to gain and maintain political power.
