Reviews

There are some excellent analysts publishing on politics and violence, and there are also excellent observers who walk the ground and seem to have the inside story. Michael Radu is both. Truly global in his interests, Radu is as good on Africa as on Central America, as learned about the Kurdish Worker's Party as he is on Sendero Luminoso in Peru. These are scintillating and learned essays. -- Christopher C. Harmon, Kim T. Adamson; Chair of Insurgency & Terrorism, Marine Corps University Michael Radu's important collection of works written over numerous years reflects a deep engagement and understanding of the realities of terrorism and conflict in varied parts of the world including Latin America and Europe. Radu's writings are a convincing broadside against any form of appeasement of terrorists. He exposes many self-proclaimed freedom fighters, such as the PKK, for the terrorists they are and details their shady connections and dealings. Likewise, his insight into the flawed policies to confrontand occasionally appeasement ofterrorists that the left has made a trademark are refreshing. -- Dr. Svante Cornell, Research Director of Central Asia-Caucasus Institute and Silk Road Studies Program, Johns Hopkins University-SAIS/Uppsala University
Michael Radu is a rare analyst's analyst who examines instruments of political power and their use in contemporary history. Rather than frame global events and foreign crises in terms served up by the media or ascribe intelligence to street mobs like some writers, Radu draws comparisons and lets you know who has pulled what lever before and against whom. He gives you the details behind the strikes and mass mobilizations, providing context and a basis for understanding history as well as for making informed predictions. While his words may seem blunt and, at times grim, they always ring true. --Steve Johnson, Senior Policy Analyst for Latin America, The Kathryn and Shelby Cullom Davis Institute for International Studies

[T]his book is an incredibly diverse tome dedicated to the issues of conflict, guerilla warfare, and political violence. The style of the book is very accessible... [A]n interesting read and a worthy work. Summing Up: Recommended. General readers, upper-division undergraduates through faculty.
--M. D.
