OverviewLike no other artist of the 20th century, Pablo Picasso has adopted the variety of graphic techniques and expanded them through his play with artistic variation. This exhibition catalogue is the first one to be devoted to a comprehensive presentation of the Kunsthalle Bremen's important graphic holdings and the unique history of the collection. Thus, the Kunsthalle was one of the first German museums after 1945 to acquire works by the artist. The purchases were made by the Bremen gallery owner Michael Hertz, who represented Picasso's graphic works exclusively in Germany - visionary at a time when Picasso's work was still attracting criticism. Hertz had a keen sense for placing the works on the market and in important exhibitions, such as documenta III in 1964, and his commitment soon made Picasso's works sought after by museums and collectors. Thanks to the cooperation with the Hertz Gallery, the Kunsthalle was able to expand its collection of Picasso prints to what was then the most extensive one in Germany. In doing so, it consistently gave the collection a modern face that continues to have an impact to this day: Picasso's large-format and colour lithographs and linocuts have inspired numerous artists and revived these media.
