Overview

The Dictionary of Ethics, Theology and Society provides a unique, ground-breaking survey of the major ethical, theological and political influences which have shaped, and continue to shape, modern Western society. This is the first comprehensive reference work to examine in depth the historical and contemporary inter-relations of these influences. Over 250 entries cover subjects as diverse and wide-ranging as abortion, animal rights, human sexuality, unemployment and women's ordination. These separately-authored articles have been contributed by the world's leading subject specialists from a multitude of disciplines - from theology, philosophy and political science to economics, gay and lesbian studies and the life sciences - reflecting the unique inter-disciplinary synthesis that the Dictionary provides. Structure Entries are arranged alphabetically, and all have a universal structure, containing: * an outline of the topic treated * a description of the principal ideas behind the topic and its history, development and the contemporary debate * a detailed bibliography giving the major sources in the field Entries are fully cross-referenced to allow the user to access information quickly and easily and a detailed general Index helps the user to zero in on relevant information. The entire work is prefaced by an editorial introduction outlining its scope and diversity of coverage. Selected entries include: Abortion * AIDS * Animal Rights * Capital Punishment * Communism * Domestic Violence * Drug Addiction * Ecological Theology * Ethics * Evil * Government * Homophobia * Humanism * Imperialism * Liberation Theology * Nuclear Energy * Politics * Pornography * Racism * Sexism * Society * Unemployment * Vivisection * Women's Ordination * Zoos Vickie Abt, Penn State University; Brenda Almond, Hull University, UK; Rex Ambler, Birmingham University, UK; James Atkinson, Sheffield University; Reverend Dr Paul Avis
