In 1959, after a sojourn working and living in New Zealand and completing two periods of National Service in the Royal New Zealand Artillery and back home in the Royal Air Force, he joined his father's small decorating business. His dedication to his work soon resulted in the firm gaining a series of large public sector contracts including Windsor Castle and later, Buckingham Palace. By the 1970s Colin was controlling a flourishing group of companies in the decorating and building field.
