OverviewExcerpt from Der Dummkopf: Lustspiel in F nf Aufz gen Fulda began his literary career, as has been mentioned, with a study of the drama, and the drama has remained his vocation ever since. His few slight ventures in fiction and two volumes of verse are negligible, though a volume of poetical epigrams deserves mention as revealing a marked trait of his intellectual character. From 1883 to the present day he has produced a constant succession of plays, most of which have obtained at least a temporary foothold upon the stage. He is probably next to Haupt mann and Sudermann the most widely known of living German dramatists. It may be questioned, however, whether his plays do not belong to the history of the theatre rather than to the history of literature. Fulda possesses skill in dramatic technique, a good knowledge of stage requirements, and exceptional ability in the man agement of dialogue. His plays, therefore, act well. On the other hand, his deficiency in original ideas and lack of deep-seated convictions, coupled with a frequent super ficiality of treatment, constitute grave defects, for which his acknowledged wit and gracefulness and cleverness can only partly atone. Fulda is, in other words, bright, in genious, and amusing, but neither profound nor original. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
