OverviewThe Enlightenment Dr. J. Ch. Jonas (1765-1834) as a doctor in the office, canton and district of Monschau, most recently as a Prussian district physicist. However, decades before medical topographies became official duties, he provided a description of the Monschau region (1801) out of scientific interest. He was the first in the Rhineland to start vaccinating with smallpox (vaccination, 1798) and in a decade he cleared his smallpox. As one of the first occupational physicians, he dealt with the situation of skilled workers in the Monschau fine cloth manufacture and provided observations that cannot be obtained from official and economic history sources. The edition contains a detailed biographical representation and the edition of all writings written by Jonas in this context with a detailed comment.
