Overview

This is an anthology of Another Tack columns which originally saw light in recent years on the weekend pages of the Jerusalem Post, where they have been a regular weekly feature since 1999. These columns have gained an extraordinarily popular following, with many readers turning to Another Tack before perusing the rest of the paper. Their basic concept is to truly follow another tack and approach current events from novel directions and uncommon points of view. Thereby Another Tack often flies hard in the face of the prevailing bon ton and debunks conventional wisdom, the diktats of opinion-moulders and trendy group think. This is primarily achieved by contextualisation, by placing controversies and issues in their historical contexts and refreshing the readers memories, encouraging them to consider what the tendentious media often prefers they sideline or forget outright. Another Tack is readers are never spoon fed; they are challenged. The contextual backdrop may include historical references, cultural, political, and even meanderings into the realms of the arts, folklore, religion, show-biz, humour, philosophy, psychology and much more. All sorts of unexpected allusions and anecdotes may crop up in Another Tack. The final product is laced with wit and irony, kow-towing to no one but invariably expressing deep love for the Jewish people.

Reviews

This superb collection of articles from the incomparable Sarah Honig is called Debunking the Bull, and what a delightful debunking it is. But it s more than that. It is a work of passion and erudition, of insight and observation, of clarity and punch. You will pick it up and find yourself reading just one more column, and then another, and then another. And when youve read it cover to cover, probably in one long sitting, and given it to your spouse to read, and purchased additional copies for your children and your relatives then you will realize that you have been in the hands of a polemicist without equal in Israel or the world. --Bret Stephens, Foreign Affairs Columnist, The Wall Street Journal, former Editor in Chief of the Jerusalem Post. A veteran reporter with the JerusalemPost, Sarah Honig is famous for taking strong sometimes unpopular stances on Israels geopolitical situation. This book is an anthology of 57 of the best pieces from the Jerusalem Posts Another Tack column, which Honig has been writing since 1999. Although witty and insightful, the elegance of Honigs writing is sometimes lost in her eagerness to use flowery, highfalutin language. The book itself is worse off for failing to include the dates of publication with each column. One cant help but think that this would provide the stories with an additional chronological and historical context that would make it even more valuable for the reader. Nevertheless, the stories highlight the authors ability to make her arguments in an intelligent manner, using historical and biographical anecdotes to underscore her points. Overall, the anthology is an interesting perspective on Israels position in the world.

Author Information

Sarah Honig is a veteran columnist and senior editorial writer. During her decades-long history on the Jerusalem Post, she had served for many years as its political correspondent (a position she also held on the now-defunct but once-influential Davar), headed the Post s Tel Aviv bureau and wrote daily analyses of the political scene, along with in-depth features. Sarah was born in Israel and reared both in Israel and the United States. She was educated at the High School of Music and Art in New York City and at Tel Aviv University. She began work as a reporter for the Jerusalem Post while still a student. From the inception of the aliya movement in the USSR, Sarah was the leading reporter covering Soviet Jewry s struggle, often breaking the stories which were then picked up by news outlets throughout the world. In the early 1980 s Sarah became the Post s senior political correspondent. She produced a weekly column on the intricacies of Israeli politics, Insider Dealings. From 1991 2001 she was the Post s often nonconformist political analyst who spiritedly offered unusual perspectives and spotlighted the background behind the headlines. Currently Sarah is a columnist and senior editorial writer at the Jerusalem Post, contributing daily editorials on a broad variety of topics. Sarah s column, Another Tack - covering Israel and world affairs has been appearing since 1999.
