Overview

The Heroon of Trysa is, in its entirety, one of the most spectacular surviving monuments of Greco-Roman antiquity. Artistic and political aspects in the pictures are of concern today, as is the still unsolved problem of an adequate presentation of the reliefs in Vienna. The Heroon of Trysa is one of the most important monuments of Greco-Roman antiquity. In particular, the completeness of the relief decoration that composes the funerary monument of the early fourth century BC. in today's Turkey, is unique and allows an examination of the imagery of antiquity, with self-representation and identity in the ancient culture of that time. The publication deals with different facets of the Heroon, which have been discussed by well-known representatives of Lycia research in the Austrian Historical Institute in Rome. The focus is on the narrative structures and narrative styles of the relief friezes as well as the political background of the era and the question of how power and myths can be read in the imagery and architecture. Aspects of the reception and discussion of the reliefs in Viennese society and last but not least the history of the monument in Vienna and the attempts to present it are important topics in this volume.
