Cursing the Darkness: A Novel about Loss and Recovery

Overview

Cursing the Darkness is a compelling tale of fracture and family, set against the backdrop of 1989 London and Berlin. The narrative delves into the profound impact of wartime trauma through the lives of two women - whose fates collide - one Jewish, the other German. They are both determined to confront the secrets that have shaped their identities and experience. This story will resonate with anyone who has struggled with the complexities of displacement and the search for self. With rich character development and emotional depth, this novel invites readers to reflect on the legacies we inherit and the courage required to confront them, making it a must-read for those who seek connection, healing and understanding in a world fraught with conflict and suffering.

Reviews

This book deftly meets the hard literary challenge of conjuring the trauma of the Holocaust: how suffering is passed down through generations and the presence of absence. Her novel is poised, passionate, and psychologically astute. - John Lahr, Author of Tennessee Williams: Mad Pilgrimage of the Flesh, winner of the USA National Book Critics Award This is a story of yearning and displacement, and the urgent need to uncover the mysteries of the past. I was captivated, and much like the characters at its centre, desperate to break open the unfolding secrets and discover the truth. - Esther Freud, Author of I Couldn't Love You More This bold, engrossing story explores how past trauma can haunt and distort the present. An exhilarating and rewarding read. - Kim Longinotto, BAFTA winning Filmmaker Divorce Iranian Style
