Pat Paul's debut memoir Curse of Interesting Times hits any Baby-Boomer between the eyes with the jarring truths of the late '60s and early '70s. Living in a country that still brought chills to any American with the memories of Nazi Germany, Pat and her husband confronted the juxtapositions of post-war Germany and the fears of if and when he might be sent to Vietnam. While it was easy to relate to their newly-married struggles, I felt the silent wounds of the Vietnam Era rising to the surface once again. This time, though, healing came in her beauty to connect with any reader. --Suzanne Robinson Curse of Interesting Times expertly weaves together a newly-wed couples' love, the culture-shock of military life in Germany, andthe events and pop culture of the Vietnam Conflict. The intimate details of the book gave me insight into the impact that this war had on university students, military husbands and their wives, and the citizens in countries that hosted military bases. It's a studied look at an important era in American history. --Connie Shoemaker, author of The Good Daughter: Secrets, Life Stories, and Healing and Taste the Sweetness Later What a journey Patricia Ann Paul has taken us on in this cleverly-written narrative of her experiences with her American soldier husband in Germany during the Viet Nam War--a refreshingly different perspective of that newly-revisited conflict. --Bill Ward, author of Beyond the River --Stories of Life Near the Arkansas I love the way Curse of Interesting Times, a story of war and family, comes full circle in Germany. I felt like I was there with Pat and John in their tiny apartment in Germany and on their travels in post-World War II Germany during the Cold War. Such a frank and touching love story, and what an affirming way to end the book! --Sally Walling The Age was Aquarius, and no matter what else was going on in their life at that time, in the background loomed the war, the unwinnable Vietnam War. The author, Patricia Ann Paul, with her student husband, John, squarely faced their options with surprising results. --Joyce Rovetta
